WHAT ARE WE READING?

By Bing Howard

Almost nightly, my husband reads to our children. If Bert comes home really tired from work, then I usually take over the reading part.

To wrap up our busy day, we congregate in our master bedroom, Dad usually is tucked under the sheets comfortably, our two boys wrap themselves with their favorite blankets and pillows and sit by our feet on our king-size bed.

The boys look forward to hearing the next chapter with great anticipation on their faces!

After reading a chapter from a book about real people, we talk and reflect on what we just heard and how the story applies to our lives. Often, we realize how fortunate we are to have so much freedom and so much material stuff  in America.

If it's not too late, we do one lesson from a character building book. Then we ask some questions.

This is how we end most days with our children. If we let days go by without reading to them, we often notice negative changes in attitudes. Our oldest son Brian becomes impatient with his younger brother. Our youngest son Elijah tends to have unsettling dreams. The next day seem to be more rushed. But on days that we are consistently reading to our children, they are calmer and peaceful and get along very well with each other. Daily readings or devotions brings us together as a family.

These are the books that we are currently  reading to our kids. We hope you too will start a daily family reading with your children:

The Heavenly Man  - The remarkable true story of Chinese Christian Brother Yun. This book gives us a clear picture of how Christians and House Churches are persecuted in China.

Sticky Situations - 365 Devotions For Kids and Families. Our children love to hear real scenarios about kids dealing with peer pressure.
